MY TOP 5 FAVORITE SOURCES FOR SPRING BULBS

Planting spring bulbs is a large part of my gardening tasks each year. I started incorporating spring bulbs into my gardening 5 years ago, only a few years into my gardening experience. When I discovered the world of specialty bulbs, I was determined to add them to my beds that fall, but I didn’t know where to find these stunning flowers. After a little research, I decided to give Brent and Becky’s Bulbs a try and I’ve been ordering from them ever since! I’ve tried a few other companies in addition to Brent and Becky’s each year and have found my g0-to companies to order from when searching for specific varieties or bulb mixes that I know will be high quality. Below is my list of go-to shops that I order bulbs from, and most likely other plants and seeds as well!

BRENT AND BECKY’S BULBS

Brent and Becky’s Bulbs is a family-owned business from Virginia. They not only specialize in spring bulbs, but they provide other bulbs, corms, perennials, annuals, etc. They are always the first I order my spring bulbs from because they carry such a great variety. They have always provided great communication and the bulbs I’ve received are always the highest quality.

DUTCH GROWN

Dutch Grown is a new-to-me company that I’ve ordered from, but I’ve been pleased so far! This is another family-owned company since 1882 and is one of the oldest wholesale flower bulb exporters in the Netherlands. In more recent years, they have branched out and developed a warehouse in the US and now sell retail directly to home gardeners. They also sell a wide variety of bulbs, including many of the more unique specialty type bulbs.

AMERICAN MEADOWS

American Meadows is a company that I’ve ordered from many times for wildflower seeds as well as perennial plants, but they also supply many different types of bulbs as well! While I wouldn’t say the individual varieties that they carry is extensive as far as tulips go, they do carry many bulb mixes that would make it easy to incorporate multiple types of bulbs into your garden without much planning ahead of time! Even though the number of bulb varieties they carry is not large, they do carry many types that naturalize well. Most specialty tulips are not particularly hardy in most climates and tend to not produce as prolifically year after year, so if you’re looking for hardy and naturalizing varieties, American Meadows would definitely be a good resource to check out. They approach gardening with more of a wildflower approach and provide plants that work well in your habitat, which I love. They also provide a lot of growing and gardening information to support their customers for success.

JOHNNY’S SELECTED SEEDS

Johnny’s is definitely well known for their seeds in the gardening world, but last year I ended up placing an order for a few additional bulbs to add on to a seed order I was making! The bulbs arrived well packaged, and the quality was great! Despite specializing in seeds, they have a nice variety of bulbs to choose from which makes them a one stop shop if you’re needing seeds as well.

EDEN BROTHERS

Eden Brothers is another company that sells seeds, along with many bulbs, bareroots, etc. While I’ve ordered other things in the past from this company, last year was my first-year ordering bulbs and was pleased as usual. Despite not specializing in bulbs, they carry a really good variety, but what I like most was they had several bulb mixes that would make it easy incorporate in your garden that were based on either color combinations or bloom times. These mixes could be a good starting point if you’re not sure which varieties you want to try first!

If you’re new to the amazing world of bulbs, I hope this list helps point you in the right direction! I’m always on the lookout for new shops and resources, especially small or family-owned companies. These shops truly are my top favs and for all different reasons which are great resources to have depending on which need you need to fulfill in the garden!
