15 UNIQUE TULIPS TO ADD TO YOUR GARDEN
Tulips are something I look forward to every year. Not just the spring blooms, but planting season as well! The first summer we moved back to the farm I had read Erin Benzakein’s “Cut Flower Garden” and was instantly fascinated with all the beautiful varieties of spring bulbs! I placed my first order for an array of different tulip and narcissus bulbs and then anxiously waited for October to come so I could begin planting!
Tulips come in what seems like an endless number of choices when you begin to sit down to make an order. While most recognizably coming in a single layer of 5 petals in a single bright spring color, there are actually so many shapes, sizes, textures and colors available! I love the classic tulip that you think of when you think of spring, but sometimes it’s nice to add a little variety to this classic mainstay in the spring garden! I have compiled a list of some of my favorite tulips that I have in the cutting garden! I tried to pick from varieties with a long stem length, reliable vase life, and a mixture of color and texture choices!

Some of these specialty cultivars are so unique looking, I have had some visitors in the gardens mistake them for a peony or rose! It’s fun to add a bit of a showstopper to your garden beds, but I want to advise you before you make the investment, some of these might not be the best choice for perennializing in your garden to come back every year. While I seem to have a favorable climate and conditions to have my tulips come back for several years in my garden beds, that might not be the case for everyone! Even with the risk, I love adding a few of these unique tulips every year to feature in my gardens!
